Abstract

This paper starts with the importance of HVDC transmission and explains the function and build-up of smoothing reactors. Beside relevant electrical parameters also mechanical impact factors have to be considered when designing smoothing reactors. Calculations based on a simplified approach from already published papers are compared to computer simulations. This is done in order to show the influence of DC-short-circuits on the mechanical design of the smoothing reactors support structure. The ratio of dynamic stresses to static stresses from the simulation shows a significant difference to the simplified approach. The conclusion is that simulations with the actual DC short-circuit curve are justifiable in terms of technical and commercial aspects.
