Abstract

The development of machine tools as distinctive mechatronic systems is a highly interdisciplinary process. Especially expertise from the fields of mechanical, electric, fluidic, and software engineering is required. Since each of these areas constrains every other discipline, the design phase is typically characterized by serial consecution of mono-disciplinary engineering steps. This structure results firstly in long time spans for development, and secondly in design loops. The latter especially occurs, once potential for optimization in one stage is discovered during a succeeding part. This paper presents an approach to simultaneously develop machine tools. This is achieved by establishing a pre-design-phase required to identify the interdisciplinary key features, which then can be designed in parallel. The emphasis lies on deriving circuit and fluid diagrams from the functional description. Furthermore, two examples of industrial applications are given.
