IT service 2.0: A case study of smart vending machines in Beijing

  • Published:
Journal of Service Science

Abstract

This paper introduces a case where IT services played a critical role as a business enabler with a novel business model. Three companies such as Coca-Cola, Samsung Electronics, and Samsung SDS successfully made a joint effort to develop a new digitized vending machine with information services for 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Each vending machine was equipped with a LCD TV. People could watch Olympic Games in real-time or find transportation schedules, road maps, and weather information while drinking soda. Through this service, three companies were able to fulfill the sponsorship of the Olympics and learned critical lessons that could be transferred to other businesses.
