Abstract

In document layout systems, it is important to allocate the diagrams automatically. This paper defines the conditions of readability on a text including the ordered diagrams, and proposes a method for automatic and fast diagram layout creation, without backtracking, by considering the conditions. The conditions concern: 1) the distance between the diagram and the corresponding first reference location in a text, 2) the distance between the diagram and the related paragraph, and 3) the allocation balance of diagrams and paragraphs. From the experimental results using various published papers, it has been shown that 93% of the diagrams in the original papers are adapted to the conditions, and that 99% of the diagrams by using this method satisfy the conditions. As for the execution time of the proposed method, it takes less than 1 sec.
