Abstract

Economic factors have been one of the many advantages of implementing viewdata technology. The mode of transmission, the telephone network, is already in place. Terminals are relatively cheap. Yet viewdata has not had the impact on business that was first expected. The article charts the development of the Prestel system in the UK, and discusses possible applications of the technology in the modern office. Private systems are also discussed, along with standards and the potential benefits of the technology.
