Abstract

This paper argues that in order for ISDN to succeed, suitable terminal equipment must be available. Following a brief overview of the ISDN user/network interface model, the article goes on to classify some of the key types of ISDN terminal. In addition, ISPBXs are also considered: it seems likely that they will play a leading role in ISDN, and indeed, these systems are already paving the way by implementing ISDN services together with the sophisticated signalling protocols which are required in order to control them. The related standards issues are also examined.
