PaperPerformance analysis of modified ordered-statistics CFAR processors in nonhomogeneous environments
Abstract
Order-statistics (OS) is a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) technique which is relatively immune to the presence of interfering targets among the reference cells used to determine the average background level. Unfortunately, the large processing time required by this technique limits its practical use. Two modified versions of this processor, namely ordered-statistics greatest-of (OSGO) and ordered-statistics smallest-of (OSSO), are proposed. These versions require less processing time than OS technique. The purpose of this paper is to provide a complete detection analysis for these processors in nonhomogeneous background noise under chi-square target fluctuation model. Analytical results of performance are presented for OS-CFAR procedures in both multiple target environments with one or more interfering targets and in regions of clutter transitions. The OSGO detector has a better performance in homogeneous background and it accommodates interfering targets in the reference window. In addition, it controls the rate of false alarm in the presence of clutter edges.

On the statistical functions characterizing linear sums of matched-filter outputs for the Nakagami target fluctuation model
2011, AEU - International Journal of Electronics and CommunicationsFor the first time, exact and explicit expressions are obtained for the statistical functions characterizing linear sums of matched-filter outputs for the case of the Nakagami target fluctuation model. The expressions involve some known special functions. Their performance is compared with some known approximations for the statistical functions. Computer programs are also provided for their easy implementation.
Exact performance analysis of OS modified versions with noncoherent integration in nonideal situations
2005, Journal of the Franklin InstituteThe radar signals returning from the targets being illuminated are usually accompanied by thermal noise and clutter. Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) processors are useful for detecting these targets in a background for which the parameters of the statistical distribution are not known and may be nonstationary. The ordered-statistics (OS) CFAR technique has been proven to work satisfactorily in both multiple-target and nonuniform clutter cases. Unfortunately, the large processing time taken by this scheme limits its practical uses. The modified versions of the OS processor have been proposed to replace it in these applications. They can reduce the processing time of the single-window OS detector in half without changing its useful properties. Our goal in this paper is to provide a complete detection analysis for the OS processor along with ordered-statistic greatest-of (OSGO) and ordered-statistic smallest-of (OSSO) modified versions, for M postdetection integrated pulses when the operating environment is nonideal. Analytical results of performance are presented in both multiple-target situations and in regions of clutter power transitions. The primary and the secondary interfering targets are assumed to be fluctuating in accordance with the Swerling II target fluctuation model. As the number of noncoherently integrated pulses increases, lower threshold values and consequently better detection performances are obtained in both homogeneous and multiple-target background models. However, the false alarm rate performance of OSSO-CFAR scheme at clutter edges worsens with increasing the postdetection integrated pulses. As predicted, the OSGO-CFAR detector accommodates the presence of spurious targets in the reference window, given that their number is within its allowable range in each local window, and controls the rate of false alarm when the contents of the reference cells have clutter boundaries. The OSSO-CFAR scheme is useful in the situation where there is a cluster of radar targets amongst the estimation cells.
Detection analysis of linearly combined order statistic CFAR algorithms in nonhomogeneous background environments
1998, Signal ProcessingAutomatic detection radars require some technique of adaptation against variations in the background clutter in order to control their false alarm rate. Recent interest has focused on order statistic based algorithms where they are quite robust against both interference and clutter edges. The primary purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance of a CFAR procedure that uses a linear combination of order statistics (LCOS) as a test statistic for its noise power level estimation. This processor is more general than the trimmed mean scheme. The LCOS-CFAR algorithm reduces to the cell-averaging (CA), order statistic (OS), censored cell averaging (CCA), censored mean level (CML) and trimmed mean (TM) CFAR algorithms for specific parameter values. The performance of the proposed detector is evaluated in the case where the reference sample set contains abrupt change in clutter power distribution amongst its elements and when the content of the sample set is contaminated with returns from the interferers. Besides providing a complete detection analysis for single pulse detection, this paper extends the single pulse analysis to the LCOS-CFAR processor with noncoherent integration of M-pulses when the background environments are nonhomogeneous. The primary and the secondary extraneous targets are assumed to be fluctuated in accordance with the Swerling II target model and closed-form expressions for the false alarm and detection probabilities are derived for the two cases.
Analysis of adaptive radar systems processing M-sweeps in target multiplicity and clutter boundary environments
1998, Signal ProcessingThe problem of multipulse performance evaluation of radar detection systems in nonhomogeneous environments is addressed. The order-statistic (OS)-based algorithms, which set thresholds by processing magnitude-ordered observations within finite moving windows, give a marginal improvement compared with the cell-averaging (CA) procedure in false alarm rate performance in clutter power transitions and due to their immunity to the presence of spurious target returns among the reference cells. Three types of these CFAR detectors are analyzed in this paper. These systems are of the two-window type where they can be used to reduce the large processing time by half against the one-window scheme in ordering the contents of the estimation cells. The considered detectors are: the mean-level (ML) the maximum (MX) and the minimum (MN)-ordered statistics as well as the conventional OS scheme. The performance prediction of these systems employing noncoherent integration for chi-square family of fluctuating targets both in the absence and presence of clutter edges or interfering targets is calculated theoretically. Curves for the detectability loss required thresholds, false alarm rate performance in clutter boundaries and detection performance in multiple target situations are presented with special emphasis on the important Swerling II target fluctuation model. The results show that the ML-OS scheme has the best detection performance and the MX-OS scheme is the preferable one that behaves robust against clutter edges. While the MN-OS scheme does not appear to offer any advantage over others, except in the case where a cluster of radar targets exists among the contents of the reference windows.
Performance analysis of the excision CFAR detection techniques with contaminated reference channels
1997, Signal ProcessingThe presence of one or more interfering target returns amongst the reference cells causes the adaptive threshold to increase erroneously. This effect makes a major source of performance impairment for some types of cell-averaging detectors. To improve the radar performance in this situation, it is natural to attempt to remove these interferers from the reference samples before establishing the detection threshold. The excision cell-averaging (EXCA) technique carries out this task by excising strong samples, that exceed an excision threshold, from the reference window prior to making the cell-averaging operation. The ML detection is used in radar systems to control the increased false alarm probability that occurs in nonstationary noise environment. On the other hand, the MAX operation is included to control false alarms at clutter edges and the MIN operation is proposed to resolve closely spaced targets. For these reasons, we introduced the ML-EXCA, MX-EXCA and MN-EXCA for radar target detection. This paper provides a complete detection analysis for these schemes in both a homogeneous environment and in an environment of an arbitrary number of outlying targets. A Swerling II target fluctuation is used as a model for the received signal and only single pulse detection in considered.
