Abstract

Prompted by a request to write a responder to McDermott's invited paper for the IFIP 86 congress in Dublin, this paper resulted in which we indicate some problems around Expert Systems (ES) in general and make some critical remarks on McDermott's paper. First, we place his paper in the context of expectations about ES's in general. Next, because his paper goes into some of the troubles of current Expert Systems, we will, in particular, deal with the question whether the current situation around ES's is healthy. We shall confront McDermott's opinions with opinions of other workers in the ES field.

Software maintenance support for knowledge-based systems

With the increasing use of knowledge-based systems in public and private organizations, maintenance of these systems is becoming crucial. However, the main knowledge representation paradigms have not been carefully examined in terms of maintainability. In this article, we provide a synthesis of software engineering literature on software maintenance, review the state of knowledge-based systems development in practice, and, using a case study along with a number of real-world examples, explain why many practitioners are encountering problems in maintaining large knowledge-based systems. The results of the case study demonstrate that broader spectrum, mixed-representation languages are more in line with the software engineering maintenance principles than are single-paradigm languages.
Limitations of knowledge-based systems for financial analysis in banking

Financial analysis is considered to be a knowledge-intensive task, involving knowledge from several areas. Nowadays, banking is exploring knowledge-based systems to improve operational efficiency and customer relations while currently reducing costs. Financial analysis is one of the promising areas for these kinds of applications. This article discusses limitations of the utilization of knowledge-based systems within financial analysis (i.e., the lack of a theoretical framework for such analysis). Furthermore, we show how some of these limitations have been met in the design and implementation of the KABAL system, which is a knowledge-based system for financial analysis. (Kabal is the Norwegian word for patience.)
Knowledge-based systems for strategic market planning in small firms

This paper gives an overview of strategic planning and decision-making in small firms, together with a discussion of the use of knowledge-based systems in strategic market planning. Furthermore, we describe the STRATEX system, which is a knowledge-based system for strategic market-planning in the export trade of fish and fisheries products. The results of the pilot system development of STRATEX are briefly presented, along with a discussion of needs for further developments in this field.
Features of second-generation expert systems-An extended overview

Second-generation expert systems emerged recently in order to overcome the shortcomings and limitations of first-generation expert systems. This paper presents a systematic and extended overview of second-generation expert-system features. In order to emphasize the improvements introduced by the second generation, a detailed discussion of the shortcomings and limitations of first-generation expert systems is also presented. Several examples of second-generation expert-system research, development and application are discussed. The examples provide a precise insight into the state of the art in the field.
