Abstract

An improvement is brought to the Frankot-Chellapa method which is based on the use of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) for handling the integrability constraint in the shape-from-shading problem. It is pointed out that the true values of the surface derivatives, if obtained from the minimization of the brightness criterion, are not preserved by the DFT. A mirror operation on the discrete fields of the surface derivatives is then proposed to eliminate this drawback. It is shown that the true surface can be closely reconstructed in this way.
