Abstract

Standards developed within the framework of the OSI model are ripe for commercial exploitation. This requires new agreements, for which new associations of Vendors and Users have been set up. Cooperation is such that world-wide convergence of usage is feasible. Accent is placed on European activity in the domain of Harmonised Standards Usage and Tests.

Transport and link layer performance comparison of CSMA/CD, token bus and token ring networks

By means of experimental measurements, a comparative study is made on OSI transport and datalink layer performance in order to determine the relative merits of CSMA/CD, token bus and token ring networks. The results show that, by and large, token ring gives the best performance, both at datalink and transport interfaces. Of the other two networks, token bus performs better at transport layer, whereas CSMA/CD is capable of yielding higher throughput at datalink layer. Detailed analysis of throughput and end-to-end delay shows that the datalink service is two-times more efficient than the transport service. The difference gives the protocol penalty for providing reliable message delivery. The efficiency of the transport service is made worse by message segmentation, which contributes substantially to overall message latency. A study of the use of window credit confirms that it is an effective tool for controlling the data flow.

The many options in current open systems interconnection layer-protocol standards for each of the seven OSI layers has caused much confusion and many difficulties in protocol selection. This paper provides an in-depth analysis on the requirements of the complimentary services of connectionless versus connection-oriented functions for each layer in order to select a set of cooperative protocol suites appropriate for use in interconnected heterogeneous local area networks. The choice hinges on the adoption of either a connectionless or connection-oriented internetworking strategy. The two schools of thought have led to two probable schemes for LAN profiles: scheme 1 — TP4-IP-LLC1 (connectionless network service); and scheme 2 — TP1-X.25PLP-LLC1 (connection-oriented network service). Detailed analysis on the pros and cons of the two LAN profiles shows that scheme 1 is more efficient and versatile than scheme 2, and thus a preferred approach in local area networking. This is in line with the rationale of profile adoption of MAP, TOP, and other international bodies.
