Abstract

SWITCH is the name of both the Swiss national network for research and education and the organization that is currently planning and implementing it. This paper describes the organizational environment of the project, the services to be offered to researcher and students at Swiss universities and the technical solutions that were selected to implement the network.

The process of migration to X.400 mail services within the Swiss academic community and the Swiss participation in the RATE R&D MHS has led to the need for a uniform naming and addressing strategy for electronic mail services in Switzerland. Although on the long term mail services will be based on X.400, there are several non-X.400 mail services that will have to be supported for some time, since they are heavily used and currently cannot be migrated to X.400 systems for technical or financial reasons.
We present a naming and addressing scheme that provides a common name space for all academic electronic mail users within Switzerland and offers full connectivity to all major foreign electronic mail networks by means of gateways. Following RFC-987 and other recommendations, a mapping between RFC-822 addresses and X.400 Originator/Recipient-Addresses is provided that allows a smooth integration of a Swiss academic mail user into both X.400- and RFC-822 based electronic mail networks.
