Abstract

In this paper, we have examined the validity of Lotka's function for a measurement of scientific productivity. A systematic deviation of this function from numerical examples has been found by introducing a different least square formulation instead of a logarithmic linearization. Therefore, a modification on the measurement of the publication frequencies is proposed.

In recent years, scientometrics has been used for quantitative analysis and for obtaining statistics that measure the contribution of scientific publications to the advancement of knowledge within a given topic or country [11,12]. Many researchers [13–21] have made some important contributions to scientometric applications. Indeed, scientific publications represent current research trends and can be used to identify the focus of present, past, or future research [22].
The present study was conducted to find out the development trends of the scientific studies in the field of renewable energies in Turkey. All the publications in the ISI Web database were screened using 36 different keywords in title or topics based on the affiliation addresses including the word “Turkey”. A total of 12,197 publications were processed article by article and as a result 1555 papers were found to focus on renewable energies between the years 1980 and 2008 with the contributions of 1605 authors. The results showed that 45.2% was experimental, 34.3% informational studies whereas 20.5% was available system analysis. Number of publications in biomass and conversion system (39.1%) and solar energy systems (20.0%) were dominating. Both number of publications and citations increased in the last decade and more than half of total contributions were published last four years. Results indicated that policy development studies (3.3%) were the weakest among the whole parameters investigated.
A multidimensional analysis of scientific dynamics. Part I. Case studies of mathematical logic in the 20th century

Sequences of empirical Lotka-like distributions of the publications of scientific areas are mapped into a multidimensional parameter space. On this basis a new definition of the notion of an epidemic phase of a discipline is introduced. A graphic representation of the parameter space along with results of an exponential regression analysis of the Lotka exponent yield an image of the inner state of a discipline and renders possible a prognosis. Examples, primarily from mathematical logic, are described in detail. The notion of a scientific elite is discussed and the hypotheses of Ortega, Merton, and Price are critically assessed.
