Abstract

This paper presents a bibliography of over 1,100 references related to the computer processing of pictorial information, arranged by subject matter. Coverage is restricted, for the most part, to a selected set of U.S. journals and proceedings of specialized meetings. The topics covered include digitization, approximation, and compression; filtering, enhancement, restoration, and reconstruction; hardware and software; pictorial pattern recognition; feature detection, segmentation, and image analysis; matching and time-varying imagery; shape and pattern; texture; formal models; and three-dimensional scene analysis. No attempt is made to evaluate or summarize the items cited; the purpose is simply to provide a convenient compendium of references.

A retrospective on real-time imaging, a new taxonomy and a roadmap for the future

In this paper, the history and current state of research in real-time imaging is discussed and a review of previous taxonomies for classifying real-time imaging research is presented. Next, a new taxonomy is proposed followed by a review of the state of research with respect to that taxonomy. Finally, future research in these areas is suggested. The objective is to provide a clear vision of the past and a roadmap for future researchers in this field.
Classifying the literature related to computer vision and image analysis

Publications related to computer vision and image analysis can be classified by subject and type in various ways. A publication often needs to be assigned to multiple subject classes. In most cases, key words that occur in the title of a publication can be used to assign it to appropriate classes. It should be possible to semiautomatically compile bibliographies of the current literature by collecting references from existing databases or publishers' web pages, standardizing their format, and classifying them using key words, but to ensure that the resulting bibliography is of good stylistic quality, manual postediting will be necessary.

The demands made on vision systems by real time and satellite applications have outstretched tradional computing environments. In response research has focused on attempting to apply knowledge based techniques and exploit distributed computing architectures. This paper examines knowledge based frameworks for image understanding systems exploiting distributed computing environments. An evaluation of these frameworks is based on the implementation and modelling of an image registration subsystem.
Intelligent control systems apparatus for the control engineering laboratory

The article describes the development of a simple laboratory apparatus for teaching some basic ideas associated with intelligent control systems, especially those encountered in pattern recognition and robotic movement. The specific aim is to meet the emerging need for laboratory teaching aids which take the student of control engineering beyond the traditional scope of activities. In particular, we see scope for laboratory training which deals with the area where smart sensors, intelligent control algorithms and actuators may be used. Robotics is a topical example of this application, however other applications exist. Indeed they are proliferating as it becomes more common to embed microcomputers within control systems components. In this spirit, the aim of this article is to describe the development of a laboratory apparatus which allows a wide range of intelligent control applications to be investigated. These range from object classification, through maze solving, to control algorithms for terrain following aircraft. The equipment is physically compact, flexible in its range of application and readily controlled by a personal computer.
