2021, Advances in Applied MechanicsCitation Excerpt :Alternatively, wavefront approaches visit grid points in an ordered fashion starting from the interface and propagating to increasingly farther points, typically requiring the choice of the active point in an ordered list. The distance values of active points are evaluated either by incrementing values of neighboring points according to a distance template (Chamfer Distance Transform; Borgefors, 1996; Rhodes, 1992; Rosenfeld & Pfaltz, 1966), by incrementing vectors to the nearest feature according to a vector template (Vector Distance Transform; Danielson, 1980; Mullikin, 1992), or by finite difference approximations of the Eikonal equation (Fast Marching Method, Sethian, 1999a, 1999b; Fast Sweeping Method, Detrixhe, Gibou, & Min, 2013; Zhao, 2005). The Fast Marching Method (FMM) is briefly outlined here.
