Modelling casework: a case study of the development of computer-based models for judgemental training

Abstract

The use of computer-based simulation models for training staff in procedures is well established. This paper focuses on the development of computer-based models for judgemental training in an area of activity where procedural aspects are well understood and highly formalised. The need for improved judgements arises out of an increasing concern for cost-effectiveness in casework.

The paper concentrates on the participative development of the models which, in computer-realised form, create a highly interactive training aid. The model development work itself provides an interesting case study in some aspects of knowledge engineering. The knowledge elicitation and representation parts of the study took place almost entirely within a multi-disciplinary environment of a team having a mixture of modelling, training and domain expertise.
