Abstract

Multimedia presentations for the Web increasingly attract attention. With the growth of the Internet and the expressiveness of multimedia, there are new possibilities for advertising and electronic shopping. To improve the acceptance of customers and to realize “new shopping fun” without annoyance, it seems necessary to develop a system that adapts the product presentation to the interest of the customers, their media preferences and the hardware and software preconditions. This paper introduces the TELLIM system which offers these features for multimedia presentations in the web by using an incremental learning algorithm.

Lack of sociability is associated with the benefit of avoiding social interaction with other people (whether they are consumers or sales people) and of consuming online free from shyness or embarrassment. This motivation has been indicated in a number of earlier studies (see: To et al. 2007, Joerding and Meissner 1998, Wolfinbarger and Gilly 2001). Joerding and Meissner (1998) indicate that consumers who shop over the Internet prefer to browse by visualizing products of interest, without being bothered; this type of consumer, in general, prefers to avoid interaction with sales people while doing his or her shopping.
