The basic concepts

In the article by Ozyurt and Bayari (2003), the authors incorrectly describe the basic concepts (Ozyurt and Bayari, 2003, Eqs. (1), (2), (3)), probably due to misconception. The Ozyurt and Bayari (2003) concepts are based on the lumped-parameter approach (LPA) and because different equations have been used in the literature to describe LPA, it may be worth providing a brief clarification. For the basic concepts of the LPA (also called Black-Box-Models) the reader is referred to Maloszewski and

Weighting functions

Ozyurt and Bayari (2003) have derived incorrect weighting functions for Models 6, 12, 13 and 15. Furthermore, they have presented the weighting functions for most of the models improperly. Generally, the weighting function, or transit time distribution function, describes the distribution of the transit times of water particles between the input (recharge zone) and output (discharge) zone of the system. The dimension of a weighting function is [T−1].

The software mentioned from other authors has different advantages, which are helpful in a range of analytical situations. The software summarized in Table 5 was mainly referred in IAEA (2006) and where available, detailed in publications: ‘Tracer’ by Bayari (2002), ‘Tracermodel1’ by Böhlke (2005), ‘Lumped’ by Ozyurt (2003), comment on ‘Lumped’ by Han and Maloszewski (2006), ‘Lumped Unsteady’ (LUMPEDUS) by Ozyurt and Bayari (2005). Environmental techniques used in the past to determine MRT of groundwater provided individual results, each one associated with individual problems of specific tracers.
