Rook polynomials on two-dimensional surfaces and graceful labellings of graphs

Abstract

By a simple trick we may generalise the rook polynomial for an $n\times n$ chessboard to various two-dimensional surfaces, the conventional chessboard corresponding to the torus. In the case of the Möbius band and the Klein bottle, there is a close connection to graceful labellings of graphs.
