From computer supported collaborative work to social computing: a brief history of research in collaboration

This Special Issue on Advances in Computer Supported Collaboration: Technologies and Systems of the Future Generation Computer Systems Journal is founded mainly on extended contributions from the 2011 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS 2011). In this editorial, we briefly survey the evolution of the computer supported collaboration field and introduce some aspects of the CTS Conference in order to frame the contributions in this Special Issue.

Contributions in this special issue

This special issue was originally conceived at the 2011 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS 2011), held on May 23–27, 2011 at the Sheraton University City Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Selected papers from the conference were invited for extended submission based on the conference technical program committee and tracks organizers recommendations. Anna Divoli is the Chief Research Officer of Pingar, a text analytics company. She holds an M.Sc. in Biosystems and Informatics from the University of Liverpool and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Text Mining from the University of Manchester. For her doctoral research, Anna studied sentence extraction for semi-automatic annotation of biological databases.       Another recurring problem is the quality of the results and their validation, and the contribution of new approaches (such as crowdsourcing or citizen science) to speed up data preprocessing and curation. Other examples of collaborative, participative research can be found, among others, in [11], showing the potential of research along these lines. While eScience research has produced work from many different domains, some disciplines appear more frequently in this kind of collaboration, in particular in Health Sciences (of which Bioinformatics is a prime example) and Physical sciences (e.g., Astronomy, Earth Sciences and Chemistry).

    Anna Divoli is the Chief Research Officer of Pingar, a text analytics company. She holds an M.Sc. in Biosystems and Informatics from the University of Liverpool and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Text Mining from the University of Manchester. For her doctoral research, Anna studied sentence extraction for semi-automatic annotation of biological databases. After her Ph.D., she carried out postdoctoral research, first in user search interfaces in the School of Information at the University of California at Berkeley and then in knowledge acquisition on cancer metastasis from expert opinions in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on developing methodologies for acquiring knowledge from textual data and studying the effect of human factors in that process.

    Domenico Potena is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Università Politecnica delle Marche. He received the M.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Ancona, Italy, in 2001, and the Ph.D. in Information Systems Engineering from the Università Politecnica delle Marche, Italy, in 2004. From June 2005 to October 2008, he was post-doctoral fellow at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Informatica, Gestionale e dell’Automazione - Università Politecnica delle Marche. His research interests include knowledge discovery in databases, data warehousing, information systems, open innovation and service oriented architectures.

    Claudia Diamantini is Associate Professor at the Information Engineering Department of the Polytechnic University of Marche, Italy where she leads the Knowledge Discovery & Management research group. She received the Ph.D. degree in Artificial Intelligent Systems from the University of Ancona. Her research interests are in the areas of business intelligence and semantic interoperability, with special attention to interdisciplinary relations among them. She has been working on these topics within national and international projects, and she is author of more than 80 technical papers in refereed journals and conferences. She is a member of the IEEE and ACM.

    Waleed W. Smari is a Senior Research Scientist at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. and a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His technical interests and specialties include Collaboration Systems and Technologies, High Performance Parallel and Distributed Processing and Networking, Performance Evaluation Methods and Modeling Techniques of Computing Systems, Reconfigurable Computing and Digital Systems Design, and Computer Engineering Education. He has served as PI on several research projects sponsored by government agencies and industry. He was a Visiting Fellow at government labs as well as at a number of universities around the World. He has been a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a Member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the International Society of Computers and Their Applications (ISCA), the International Association of Science and Technology for Development (IASTED), The Society for Computer Simulation International (SCS), and The European Council on Modelling and Simulation (ECMS).
