The characterization of dynamic susceptibility effects

Abstract

Understanding and quantifying dynamic susceptibility contrast, which arises from compartmentalized magnetic field perturbers (e.g., deoxyhemoglobin, contrast agents) that affect the water around them, formed the basis of a significant part of the author's fMRI-related research in the early 90's. This short note describes how the scientific work used to help understand and quantify dynamic injections of contrast agents, primarily designed for clinical MRI, was adapted to help quantify and explain BOLD imaging.

      This allows mapping of the most active regions during more extended time periods. Robert Weisskoff, a driving force in the early technical development of fMRI related techniques at MGH, who left the field in the very early days, has made a cameo appearance in this special issue to write a highly entertaining piece on dynamic gadolinium contrast and its relevance to fMRI (Weisskoff, 2012). Dan Handwerker contributed a paper describing all the myriad ways that the hemodynamic response can vary and what this implies (Handwerker et al., 2012).

Recently, the development of this idea was further motivated by Robert Weisskoff's first-person historical perspective article on dynamic susceptibility imaging (Weisskoff, 2012), in which he starts by mentioning off-hand the sheer improbability of MRI. I decided to expand on this idea and write a complete perspective of this confluence of fortunate circumstances.
