Abstract
Consider an organization operating seven days a week. Staffing requirements are specified for a single shift of workers, and are assumed constant Monday through Friday, though weekend levels may differ. Furthermore, full-time employees can be supplemented by part-time workers. We consider two types of part-timers, one limited in numbers and less costly than full-timers, the other more costly and available in any number. Assuming each full-timer must have two days off per week and A out of B weekends off, we present formulas for the most economical mix of workers and an algorithm that produces a feasible schedule.
