Abstract
Abstract. It has been suggested that the use of hypermedia is effective for fostering processes of knowledge management. A central component in knowledge management is the use of hypermedia as information resources and for the localization and selection of information. The presented research and development project “HyperDisc” (http://www.wissenskommunikation.de/hyperdisc/index.html) is based on the assumption that it is possible to implement theory-based design conceptions in hypermedia systems which would foster processes of information location and selection and which would contribute to the reduction of cognitive load in the completion of tasks. Based on a theoretical concept suggested by Marchionini (1995), a hypermedia information system was developed which aimed to foster both drilling-down processes in browsing a content hierarchy and context-relevant search simultaneously. The results of two empirical studies on the basis of HyperDisc indicate that processes of information location and selection may be facilitated and cognitive load may be reduced. They further indicate that the coherence of the selected information may be improved under the conditions of the tested approach. The results are discussed with regard to cognitive processes of mental model construction. Finally, fields of practice in the context of knowledge management are outlined in which both the design approach and empirical findings may be of relevance.
