Abstract. During a world wide web-based course the quality and the meaning of computer mediated communication (CMC) as well as the motivation of the seminar users were longitudinally assessed. With regard to motivation, task dimensions were used as predictors and intrinsic motivation as criterion. It was shown that the Face-to-Face communication (FFC) in comparison to CMC was ascribed both a greater importance and a better quality. This effect, however, appeared only for horizontal communication. For vertical communication with the instructor, no differences in the perceived quality were found. However, the quality of the CMC was evaluated altogether positively by the users. Students with more E-mail experience estimated the assumed quality of the CMC comparatively smaller. As far as task dimensions are concerned, perceived autonomy was of the highest and acknowledgement of the lowest significance. Students who felt the learning situation to be more exciting found the task also more important and transparent and were therefore intrinsically motivated. The computer and medium competence exercised no influence on the estimation of the resulting motivation potential. In FFC sessions a higher motivation was assessed compared to virtual sessions.
