Abstract
Abstract. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of sadness as a state versus depression as a trait on television behaviour. Theoretical background was the so-called “interaktives Kompensations- und Verstärkungsmodell” of Vitouch. The 81 subjects were divided into non-depressive and depressive by means of MMPI depression subscale. For each subject various quantitative and qualitative variables were measured twice: first for unspecific mood and second for the cause of sadness. There were no quantitative differences, neither for sadness nor for depression. Referring to the qualitative variables, heterogeneous effects were found for sadness versus depression. Therefore, the results indicate a clear distinction between sadness and depression in spite of similar meaning.
