This issue brings together some papers from the Computing Arts 2004 @ Newcastle conference, hosted by the Centre for Literary and Linguistic Computing at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, 7–9 July 2004. Thanks are due to the University of Newcastle and to the Australian e-Humanities Network for their support for the meeting, to John Burrows and Hilary Carey for help with arranging the sessions, and to Karyn Asher and Irene Walker for their assistance in organising the event. The conference was a lively one, taking in a broad range of work in humanities computing from Australia and New Zealand and beyond, and I am grateful to the editors of Literary and Linguistic Computing for the opportunity to bring some of its discussions to a wider audience.
