Article Type: Guest editorial From: International Journal of Pervasive Computing and Communications, Volume 11, Issue 2

This special issue of the International Journal of Pervasive Computing and Communication consists of the extended high-quality papers presented at the 16th International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based Applications & Services (iiWAS2014) in Hanoi, Vietnam.

iiWAS is the leading international conference series for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all information integration and Web-based applications and services-related areas.

The six papers included in this special issue of IJPCC were selected from 37 papers presented at the conference. Each paper was extended to include new material to show clear motivation, comprehensive related work and significant proposal with extensive performance evaluation and/or implementation results.

The paper “Security and Privacy of Smartphone Messaging Applications” gives valuable insight in the current security and privacy trends of using mobile messaging and VoIP applications on smartphones. The paper strives to give an excellent overview of the current status of security research in this area. It discusses many important security problems in detail, and reflects on the different approaches on how the shown attacks were being fixed.

The paper “Privacy-Preserving Biometrics Authentication Systems Using Fully Homomorphic Encryption” proposes the application of homomorphic encryption for biometric authentication. It contributes to the biometric identifications systems by providing a mechanism to store and retrieve fingerprints in a secured manner. It incorporates the encryption within the fingerprint representation using the public encryption method.

The paper “Modelling consequence relationships between two action, state or process Vietnamese sentences for improving the quality of new meaning-summarizing sentence” elaborates on the use of consequence relationships in the analysis of natural language. This allows for novel approaches in the field of automatic paragraph summarization. The presented approach was applied to and tested with Vietnamese language.

The paper “Proposal of a System for Visualizing Temporal Changes in Impressions from Tweets” discusses a Web-based system capable of analyzing the sentiment of users of online social networks. The work focuses on the temporal changes in sentiment and allows its users to visualize these changes and put them in perspective with recent events. The approach was evaluated in real-world experiments using Twitter feeds and was shown to be accurate in classifying negative Tweets.

A different approach to sentiment analysis is presented in “Multidimensional Sentiment Calculation Method for Twitter Based on Emoticons”. This paper focuses on the use of emoticons often found on micro-blogging services to transport subtle form of sentiment. Based on data collected during experiments, the authors were able to cluster users based on their emoticon sentiment.

The paper “A novel approach for automatic extraction of semantic data about football transfer in sport news” discusses an approach that uses methods from named entity recognition and rule-based information extraction to automatically generate document annotations as used in the Semantic Web. The framework is applied in experiments to the analysis of football transfers in sport news with very good results.

We would like to thank all the authors for their excellent work and their contribution to this special issue. Further we would like to thank the editor-in-chief Ismail Khalil and the journal editorial board for making publication of these articles possible.
