I am delighted that Journal of Documentation is publishing this festschrift for Nigel Ford. His breadth of interests, encompassing information seeking and retrieval, the significance of individual differences in information behaviour, educational information, creativity and serendipity, artificial intelligence, and information research methods, encapsulates perfectly the broad approach to the discipline which the journal seeks to encourage.
