LiS 2002 – the place to be for librarians

With over 170 exhibitors and organisations taking part and a larger floor space, the UK's Library and Information Show (LiS), 25-27 June 2002, opened at a brand new venue, ExCeL in London's Docklands, to a vote of approval from visitors.

Thousands of librarians from all over the country visited LiS and an independent survey conducted during the show revealed that almost two-thirds (63.4 per cent) preferred ExCeL to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham as a venue.

Visitors represented all sectors, including public, school, academic and workplace libraries, underlining the show's value to librarians and information managers across the profession.

The latest developments in library resources, from library management systems and furniture, shelving and display equipment to self-issue systems and products for the visually impaired, took centre stage and visitor research shows that this continues to be a key attraction for the show. Almost three-quarters (74.1 per cent) attended to keep up to speed with the latest products, while the majority (86.2 per cent) were personally involved in the selection and purchase of equipment for their library or organisation.

The topical Professional Development Events Programme, packed with high profile speakers including Children's Laureate Anne Fine and Arts Minister Baroness Blackstone, also proved extremely popular with over half of those surveyed (52.4 per cent) planning to attend a lecture during their visit.

Another key feature was the Library Book Trade Fair, an initiative designed to bring the book back to the heart of the show, where publishers and library booksellers exhibited the latest titles, catalogues and display materials. Visitors also interacted with authors who were promoting their new titles.

Pamela Hay of LiS said: "LiS is a leading show-case for new library products and services, many of which are at the cutting edge of the fast-moving world of information technology, and visitor feedback proves that the show continues to be a key event in the calendar. With its state-of-the-art facilities ExCeL reflects the advancements made in the library and information sector and provides the ideal setting for the show."

LiS 2003 will take place from 10-12 June 2003.
