Abstract:
Haptic display may become one of the next generation human interface devices. It is made of many compact actuators that can control the position and force on the 2D surface. For the preparation of the 2D haptic display, this paper proposes a 1D array haptic actuator, which consists of compact actuators arranged in one dimensional row, and has a virtual spring between two nearby actuators. In this paper, the basic operation principle of the 1D array actuator is introduced and the propagation wave equation is derived. The solution is also proposed under some assumptions. Simulations and experiments were conducted to confirm the motion of the actuator, and several results of wavy motion are graphically shown. As the simulation results, it is shown that the propagation velocity and delay of the wave can be changed by the virtual elastic coefficient. As the experimental results, the wavy motion can be represented on the actual 1D array actuator.
