Abstract:
Recent generations of digital video broadcasting for terrestrial transmission, such as DVB-T2 and ATSC 3.0 are based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. As known, OFDM signal has a very high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which affects the system performance. Different algorithms have been proposed to reduce the PAPR effects on the transmitted signal and to enhance the broadcasting system efficiency. Both DVB-T2 and ATSC 3.0 have been adopted tone reservation (TR) method to reduce the PAPR of multi-carriers signals. This method is based on an iterative process where a predefined kernel is applied to reduce a peak power at each iteration. In this study, we propose an alternative solution to enhance the energy efficiency of digital video broadcasting systems. This alternative is called Iterative Dichotomy PAPR (IDP) reduction method. The energy efficiency discussed in this study compares TR and IDP methods, while considering the software consumption in a FPGA platform. The simulation results show that the IDP method outperforms the TR method in ensuring the same error rate and transmitted power with better energy efficiency.
