Abstract:
Few advancements in underwater species tracking have occurred in recent years. For instance, acoustic biotelemetry systems were initially employed in the late ’70s, and since then, only minimum improvements have been made in terms of range and battery life. The development of a bidirectional acoustic tag, combined with other technologies such as autonomous surface and underwater vehicles, promises a significant leap forward in the field, offering enhanced data precision at a reduced operational cost.
