Abstract:
The wettability of a material is an index showing how much the material surface spreads or repels liquid. Since the wettability varies largely depending on the physico-chemical properties of surface, it is widely used as one parameter to assess the adhesiveness of liquid onto materials and the quality of surface treatment. Generally, contact angle, which is an angle between the interfaces of gas-liquid and liquid-solid, is often measured during wettability assessment. The contact angle on a dry material is easily obtained. However, in a wet state of material surface, it is difficult to measure the contact angle since the liquid droplet easily fuses with a wet surface. Recently, non-contact wettability assessment apparatus has been developed. It can evaluate the wettability of material by observing liquid behavior of how it spreads and covers the material surface, as well as liquid-squeezing behavior when air injection is applied and after the air injection ceases. In this study, we reported the application of air-injection-mediated liquid exclusion methods to assess the wettability of different species of cultivated cells surfaces.
