Abstract:
Expanding the new technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) has caused spectrum scarcity. Spectrum sensing can help LTE find other available frequencies to use as secondary user. There are many solutions to enhance the spectrum sensing. In this paper, we are looking at frequency bands in TV broadcasting spectrum as a suitable candidate to be used in LTE technology. We also review different methods in spectrum sensing, and provide a classification for possible scenarios in using spectrum sensing in LTE. Choosing one of these scenarios, cooperative spectrum sensing in LTE using TV white spectrum with a comparing method is suggested. The method compares the measured energy level reported by different LTE users as cognitive radio devices and lets LTE use TV white spaces only when it is sure that the frequency is not used by TV broadcasting service as the primary service. The reported available frequencies are used in a formula to calculate the capacity requirements for LTE. The simulations show that cooperative spectrum sensing even in a very specific range of frequencies can provide available frequencies and the capacity which is needed for LTE while protecting TV broadcasting service as a primary service.
