Abstract:
Every year, electricians are victims of electric hazards. The primary concerns related to the electric hazards are electric shocks and arc flash. Therefore, electric safety in the workplace is an important topic that is addressed by different regulation bodies in USA, Canada and the European Union. In recent years, the focus on the area of arc flash hazard analysis has become a mandatory safety tool that helps to identify the incident energy level the workers may be exposed to, and informs about the protective equipment that must be worn. This paper addresses the effect of the uncertainty of arc flash parameters such as voltage, gap between electrodes, and arcing time on the incident energy. Such variations in arc flash parameters are applied to different hazard mitigation techniques. Finally, a procedure to include the parameter variation in arc flash calculations is proposed. Results of a practical case study show the improvement in hazard mitigation achieved by accounting for parameter uncertainty.
