Abstract:
The increasing number of vehicles in large cities causes some mobility problems. One such problem is the traffic jam that causes stress to drivers, high financial loss and environmental damages. To help detect and reduce congestions have been proposed ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) using vehicular networks with V2V and V2I communications. This paper presents a new protocol to the control of traffic congestions based on V2X vehicle networks (V2V and V2I communications) using the IEEE 802.11p standard. Through simulations verified the protocol performance to detect and disseminate the informations about traffic jams and the reducing of vehicles travel time. The proposed protocol was compared with two solutions in the literature and it presented to 66% less overhead messages. The results also showed a better performance of the proposed protocol in sparse networks where there has been an improvement of up to 30% in average travel time of vehicles.
