Abstract:

The power grid has undergone a substantial transformation, especially through the adoption of distributed generation (DG) and electric vehicles (EVs). However, integrating these technologies poses challenges to the grid operation such as voltage violations and power quality issues. The adequate use of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can help address these challenges, providing support for the operation. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimization methodology for BESS power reference scheduling. The primary goals of the proposed optimization are to minimize power losses, enhance load curve smoothness, and improve voltage profiles. These objectives are pursued while also considering the technical and operational constraints of both the grid and BESS. Simulation results from a feeder demonstrate that the BESS operation, based on the proposed scheduling method, significantly reduces peak demand, enhances voltage profiles, mitigates losses, and improves power factor.
