Abstract:

The paper examines solutions for secure Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications that support adaptive real-time traffic management in an intersection. We determine the basic functional requirements of such services using a simplified model of an intersection. Then, we identify the communications security and user privacy requirements for external and internal adversaries that want to compromise the service by exploiting vulnerabilities of the communication system and information collected from the vehicles. We present several cryptographic protocols that satisfy these requirements and assess their security and performance tradeoffs. We assume that the service requires persistent communications between the vehicles and the infrastructure and focus on the communications security.
