Abstract:
A form of combined source-channel coding is investigated in which error resilient source codes replace the typical concatenation of compression with channel coding. When very low bit rate transmission over poor quality channels, low coding complexity, or partial decoding of the source is required, these codes can outperform the traditional concatenated schemes. A simple, although suboptimal, technique is given for constructing the codes and a code-specific bound on performance is given. Simulation results are shown for a number of error resilient codes.
