Abstract:
A revival of the Heian large shogi was made in relation to the history of the development of the large shogi in ancient Japan. At the same time, a hypothesis on the origins of Chinese xiangqi and chess is proposed. Previous studies have shown that the development of ancient Japanese large shogi, which originated from Maka large shogi, followed a certain set of rules, and the discussion in this paper is premised on this knowledge. The number of pieces is successively reduced by 31 in the process from Maka large shogi (96 pieces) to Heian large shogi (34 pieces). The pieces of Heian Shogi were further divided into two parts: 16 pieces of chess and 16 pieces of Chinese xiangqi. The process of bisection can be shown objectively according to certain rules, without intervening subjectivity.
