Abstract:

We propose an optimization method for enhancing the efficiency of order picking process in warehouses. Order batching, the sequencing and allocation of orders to picking workers, is one of the challenging combinatorial optimization problems. Our approach adopts island model genetic algorithm (IMGA) for order batching and proposes its initialization technique using clustering orders to divide a large-sized population into smaller partitions. By using the center-of-gravity coordinates of products in an order, we divide effectively the population of orders and then enable more efficient order batching. We conducted a simulation experiment using real-world data and confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method.
