Abstract:

Electricity networks are becoming more complex structures with high penetration of distributed generation (DG) units. The operation of these systems requires advanced data acquisition techniques and the intelligent utilization of collected data. Phasor measurement units (PMU) and intelligent embedded algorithms enable operating the power systems easier by decreasing human intervention. This paper presents comprehensive simulation structure with synchronized time and embedded software intelligence to study possible operations in micro-grids based on actual power networks. Decentralization and interconnection of autonomous grids, energy transfer between the grids and the generator operating modes are examined. Grid connected operation; transition-to-islanded and the actual islanded-mode of operation issues were simulated. Distributed resources were assumed as inverter based with storage and synchronous generator which can be considered diesel or gas-turbine driven generator. The studies were performed based on computer simulation using Matlab/Simulink with level-2 S-function block.
