Abstract:
Renewable energy resources have been proven to be environmentally friendly, sustainable sources of power generation and are particularly useful in areas with loaded grids. Solar and wind-based systems have attracted much attention to generating power in addition to the traditional power grid. However, unlike conventional generation forms, their output is intermittent and dependent upon external environmental factors such as wind speed and cloud coverage: careful planning and dispatch of available resources and storage is required, along with demand response, to balance the power system. This paper proposes a design for integrating solar generation and battery storage systems into a smart grid. The system is modelled using MATLAB/Simulink, using representative data for Middlesbrough, UK. Results are collated for different configurations of the power supply mix to study the power system instability under certain climate conditions. The results show that the proposed system manages to smooth power flow across configurations; however, economic costs and other relevant factors are yet to be assessed and remain part of future work.
