Abstract:

Supporting VCR-like interactions in P2P VoD systems is an attractive but still challenging task. These interactions, including random jump, fast forward and rewind, require desired video clips be located and fetched instantly. If not handled properly, the quality-of-experience (QoE) would severely deteriorate due to the long response latency. In this paper, we propose a layered semi-structured overlay (LSO) to address the above challenge. In LSO, based on playback progress similarity, peers are organized into a streaming layer for efficient mutual sharing. Further more, relative stable peers are adaptively selected to form a distributed and scalable indexing layer, which provides an instant resource location service for VCR-like interactions. Integration of these two layers highly increases the system efficiency and results in a prominent performance improvement. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LSO achieves very short interaction response latency with small control overhead and server workload.
