Abstract:

Combination of illumination and communication is a key characteristic of visible light communications. Different environments require different illumination levels. When the desired dimming level is relatively low or high, conventional optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) will suffer severe performance deterioration due to the clipping noise. This paper proposes a novel O-OFDM scheme named clipped flip-OFDM for indoor visible light communication systems with dimming control. In the proposed clipped flip-OFDM scheme, we design a new OFDM frame structure to keep the clipped information. We can achieve different dimming levels by adjusting the values of the direct-current (DC) bias and a control factor. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed clipped flip-OFDM scheme is less affected by the dimming level. Simulation results verify that the proposed clipped flip-OFDM achieves a wide dimming range, and the achievable spectral efficiency is stable.
