Abstract:

This research explored use of optical mouse sensors as position measurement system for a magnetorheological (MR) spherical brake. Spherical MR-brakes and other spherical joints have been designed by various researchers. Due to the 3D motion of the handle attached to the ball in the joint, it is quite challenging to measure the angular position of the handle. Our results showed linear and angular measurement accuracy of 0.1 mm and 0.5 deg. It was found that the sealing performance improved by using cotton cloth to block MR-fluid leakage. A new coil was also designed to generate magnetic field in a small space and the size of the MR-brake was reduced. The device could generate 2.6 Nm maximum resistive torque.
