Abstract:
With current autonomous driving technology, an autonomous vehicle driving solely relying on its advanced driving systems (ADS) is imperfect, and cannot ensure safety and efficiency in a real-world. To expand capabilities of autonomous driving experience, machine to machine (M2M) based cooperative driving protocol is needed to share helpful information that can improve decision making processes in autonomous driving. Within M2M communication, our team specifically focus on vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication to aid autonomous cars. In this paper, we demonstrate a V2I based cooperative driving using surveillance cameras on a road side unit (RSU). The images from the surveillance cameras are analyzed to inference the states of the vehicles on the road, and the resulting information is sent to the autonomous cars. We implement V2I cooperative driving on a real-world example merging cross road in Incheon, Korea.
