Abstract:

This paper uses a new time-current-voltage characteristic for a non-communication protection scheme in meshed distribution systems. The proposed protection scheme does not require any communication system and will be applied in backup protection coordination when the primary protection coordination fails with communication. The proposed scheme is verified by a simulation study using the IEEE 14-bus system, which can be defined as the meshed distribution system. The proposed time-current-voltage curve is tested with numerical test cases, including various fault locations, fault types, and fault resistance. The results revealed that using a new time-current-voltage characteristic protects the entire system regardless of fault conditions and achieves a significant reduction in total relay operating time, thus making such relays more suitable for protecting the meshed distribution systems.
