Abstract:

Pseudo ranges between GPS satellites and GPS reception points, calculated from the propagation times, are used for GPS positioning calculations. However, when reflected GPS signals are received, pseudo ranges longer than original linear distances are observed, so they would degrade GPS positioning accuracy especially in urban areas surrounded by many tall buildings. In order to solve this problem, the pseudo range correction has been proposed. It needs the numbers of reflections and the incident angles of the received GPS signals, and the distances from the building reflection surface at GPS reception points. In the previous studies, in a simple east-west symmetrical simulation model, the numbers of reflections and the incident angles have been estimated, and the distances from the building reflection surface have been treated as known values. In this paper, the numbers of reflections and the incident angles have also been estimated in the simulation model established by Shinjuku area environments. Moreover, the distance from the building reflection surface has actually been measured by a commercial laser range finder in Shinjuku area. It is clarified that the pseudo range correction can improve GPS positioning errors in the Shinjuku model.
