Abstract:
This paper addresses an active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) to mitigate the double path loss observed in a passive IRS. The active IRS-assisted WPCN collects the data from a power-hungry device that harvests the energy in the wireless power transfer (WPT) phase and sends its data by using the harvested energy in the subsequent wireless information transfer (WIT) phase, which are boosted by the active IRS. We optimize the AIRS reflections in WPT and WIT phases and time allocation to optimize the achievable rate, which is shown to outperform the counterpart assisted by a passive IRS.
