Abstract:

We review the principle of multidimensional (multi-D) trellis coded modulation (TCM). We describe the structure of multi-D TCM schemes and discuss their main advantages. Numerical simulations show that multi-D TCM combined with simple hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) codes are of practical interest, as they can provide a better trade-off between complexity and performance, compared to soft-decision (SD-)FEC alternatives. Moreover, the scheme is resilient to cycle-slip events due to its 90° phase rotation-invariant property.
